Congratulations Dr. Doug Beischel

As hard as I tried I could not get a link or a picture of Dr. Beishel with this article, but he has made the Phoenix Buisness Journal as a winner in the health area. The article written by Susan Ditz mentions that Dr. Doug Beischel is a volunteer chief of staff at John C. Lincoln Desert Mission Children’s Dental Clinic. It also mentioned that he was the president of the Arizona Academy of General Dentistry. Most of us know him as being a delegate and other leadership positions. The article was written August 22, 2008 and I think you can link it to phoenix.bizjournals.com but I could not get my computer to work well. On behalf of the region and as a friend, congratulations on your compassion service to others and taking the time to help others.

2008 Annual Meeting Update

The leadership of the region is hard at work discussing the various topics that will effect the AGD and general dentistry. One thing that helps is the fact that the delegates and alternate delegates receive the information prior to the meeting and are to study it prior to coming to the regional meetings. This is where we heard the concerns of our Trustee, Dr. Michael Thompson, and the various concerns of each state in our region.

This is a picture of Dr. Chris Harvan, our regional director, explaining what will happen the next few days and what concerns we have as a region. A lot of hard work behind the scenes happen to have the input necessary to serve the needs of us.

We were visited by Dr. Vincent Meyher, Dr. David Halpren, Dr. Paula S. Jones, and Christie Taratino, who shared a few light moments. Dr. Jones is the new president of the AGD and with the help of Dr. Meyher, past president and Dr. Halpren, president-elect, we can look to the National AGD for help. If you have any questions concerning your practice and think that the AGD could help, give them a call. Colorado had a problem with advertising and Dr. Mehyer and others came to the various meetings to help explain the AGD and General Dentistry position. The AGD is there to help us.

Here is Dr. Faris Elias who ran against our own Dr. Michael Thompson for Secretary. It was a hard fought campaign and even though Dr. Thompson did not win, the region was very supportive of his campaign. As the various candidates came to the region, we were very gracious and asked questions to find out what their stand on the issues would be. The style of leadership between Dr. Thompson and Dr. Elias would have been different, but as in all elections we will support them and hope the very best to them. With the CDHC and other issues, the AGD needs to have strong grass root support to help the general dentist.

Utah Annual Business Meeting

The annual meeting of the Utah AGD was held on September 15th at Marriott Downtown with Dr. Stanley Malamed presenting Oral Conscious Sedation Update. As usual Dr. Malamed presented the Ut AGD dentists information that could be used the next day and did it in his easy going manner. If you have never had the opportunity to hear Dr. Malamed you have indeed missed hearing from a very knowledgeable person. Along with the lecture, the elections of new officers was completed with Dr. Ruedi Tillman as Past President, Dr. Dan Boston as President, Dr. Kenneth Dibble as President-elect, Dr. Grant Quayle as Vice-President and Dr. Robert Boyer as Secretary. Dr. J. C. Cheney was presented with the Dentist of the Year. A special thanks to Drs. Ron Schoville and Joe Stobbe for their work on this meeting, along with Drs. Rod Maxfield and Tracy Scott for our mastership courses. Also a big thank you for all the board members for their hard work.

As I sit here today writing the regional newsletter, I am impressed with the resolve of dentists. With the economy seeming to be in trouble, gas prices still higher than we like, food prices going up and I am sure all of us have seen the price of materials increase, we as a group will do what is necessary to delivery the best dental care in the world to our patients. The AGD is known for being CE junkies and with that training we will do our best each day. I live in an area with a ratio of about 1 dentist per 800 patients, which is about half what the ratio should be. We have had about 4 new dentists last year and we will probably get some this coming year. There have been a few dentists retired and some that have moved from the area. About one week ago in the mail I received Utah’s Dental Workforce, 2006 study. The Utah Medical Education Council produced the report and some of the findings were interesting to me. It stated that all 29 counties in Utah have been designated as a dental Health Profession Shortage Area (HPSA) but in 2006 the ratio was 1 dentist per 1760 patients. Utah attracts one dental school graduate for every 36,851 Utah residents, compared to the national average of one graduate to every 67,158 U.S. residents. An estimated 41.2 dentists will retire in the year 2003, while Utah continues to attract a five-year average of 71.6 new dentists. The dentist workforce in Utah is younger than its national counterpart. The average age of a Utah dentist is 46.5 years compared to 48.0 years in the mountain region and 49.1 years in the nation. According to the report Utah will have a shortage of dentists after 2009. Like I say it is interesting reading as I do not see a shortage of dentists in my area. Community Dental Health Coordinator CDHC

The latest buzzword in dentistry seems to be MID LEVEL PROVIDER or Community Dental Health Coordinator. I hope all of you have had a chance to read the AGD White Paper on this topic. If you have not done so, please do, as it will affect how we will practice general dentistry in the future. It is important that we know and understand how important this will be. If you think that it will not have some impact on you, or you do not have much influence in what will happen, please get involved. Write to your ADA delegation, talk to the local governmental leaders and see what we can do to improve access of care to our patients without more restrictions and intrusions. I remember when I was about to graduate from dental school, one of the instructors said to always remember that you cannot be duplicated. That is still true today. We may have other help in caring for our patients, but the training and skill required can only be done by a dentist. I have seen the decline in patient/doctor relations by third parties, in particular by insurance companies and the PPO system of delivery.

I am glad to see that the National AGD has taken a stand on this issue and I hope that we all can do our part to support them. Please comment on this on this blog site so we can have a good discussion. I only would ask that you are polite and respect others view.

Now is the time to start planning on attending the Annual Meeting in Baltimore. I am planning on going early to see the various sites in Washington DC around the 4th of July with my family. I hope that all of us can take the time to attend the annual meeting.
Some of the hotels that are participating in the meeting are: Hilton Baltimore, Holiday Inn Inner Harbor, Hyatt Regency Baltimore, Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore, Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, Sheraton City Center Hotel and Sheraton Inner Harbor. Plan early and save on airfare.

Dr. Thompson is currently in his 5th year as the Trustee from Region 14. Prior to serving as Trustee he was our Regional Director and the President of the Arizona AGD. He will bring this wealth of experience in addition to his enthusiam and commitment, to the office of Vice President of the Academy of General Denistry.

Goals of Dr. Thompson as AGD Vice President

Foster Trust
Promote younger leaders and diversity on the board
Promote partnerships with other professional organizations
Remain focused on the needs of the GP which cannot be met elsewhere
